The cars of Geneva Motor Show 2010

All-new Volvo S60 premiere at Geneva Motor Show

The all-new Volvo S60 has its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show on the 2nd of March. It makes its entry into one of the automotive world's toughest segments backed by an extrovert attitude never before seen in Volvo showrooms.
It is equipped with the groundbreaking safety feature Pedestrian Detection with full auto brake. It can detect pedestrians who walk into the road in front of the car, warn the driver, and automatically apply full braking power if the driver does not respond in time. The dynamic new chassis in the all-new Volvo S60 is backed up by a range of electronic systems that sharpen the sporty driving experience such as Advanced Stability Control or Corner Traction Control, which uses torque vectoring so the car takes curves even more smoothly. The all-new Volvo S60 also features City Safety as standard.

Porsche Cayenne Sports Utility at the Geneva Motor Show 2010

Porsche is introducing the brand-new generation of the Cayenne Sports Utility at the Geneva Motor Show in early March. The highlight of this new generation is the world introduction of the Cayenne S Hybrid with its parallel full hybrid drive and fuel consumption in the New European Driving Cycle of just 8.2 litres/100 kilometres (equal to 34.4 mpg imp), resulting in CO2 emissions of just 193 g/km. The Cayenne S Hybrid combines the performance of an eight-cylinder with the economy of a six-cylinder running on much less fuel. Headed by the Cayenne S Hybrid, all models in the new generation are trendsetters in efficiency and performance in their respective segments. Compared with the former models, fuel consumption is down by up to 23 per cent.

Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid World Debut in Geneva

On 4 March a Porsche 911 GT3 R with innovative hybrid drive is making its debut at the Geneva Motor Show, opening up a new chapter in the history of Porsche with more than 20,000 wins in 45 years scored by the extremely successful Porsche 911 in racing trim.

The innovative hybrid technology featured in the car has been developed especially for racing, standing out significantly in its configuration and components from conven-tional hybrid systems. In this case, therefore, electrical front axle drive with two elec-tric motors developing 60 kW each supplements the 480-bhp four-litre flat-six at the rear of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid. A further significant point is that instead of the usual batteries in a hybrid road car, an electrical flywheel power generator fitted in the inte-rior next to the driver delivers energy to the electric motors.

The flywheel generator itself is an electric motor with its rotor spinning at speeds of up to 40,000 rpm, storing energy mechanically as rotation energy. The flywheel gen-erator is charged whenever the driver applies the brakes, with the two electric motors reversing their function on the front axle and acting themselves as generators. Then, whenever necessary, that is when accelerating out of a bend or when overtaking, the driver is able to call up extra energy from the charged flywheel generator, the fly-wheel being slowed down electromechanically in the generator mode and thus sup-plying up to 120 kW to the two electric motors at the front from its kinetic energy. This additional power is available to the driver after each charge process for approxi-mately 6 - 8 seconds.

Energy formerly converted – and thus wasted – into heat upon every application of the brakes, is now converted highly efficiently into additional drive power.

Depending on racing conditions, hybrid drive is used in this case not only for extra power, but also to save fuel. This again increases the efficiency and, accordingly, the performance of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, for example by reducing the weight of the tank or making pitstops less frequent.

After its debut in Geneva the 911 GT3 R Hybrid will be tested in long-distance races on the Nürburgring. The highlight of this test programme will be the 24 Hours on the Nordschleife of Nürburgring on 15/16 May. The focus is not on the 911 GT3 R Hybrid winning the race, but rather serving as a spearhead in technology and a “racing lab” providing know-how on the subsequent use of hybrid technology in road-going sports cars.
The 911 GT3 R Hybrid is a perfect example of the Porsche Intelligent Performance philosophy, a principle to be found in every Porsche: More power on less fuel, more efficiency and lower CO2 emissions – on the track and on the road.

Jaguar Ultimate XKR Special Edition

The latest generation of Jaguar’s award-winning XKR sports coupe now offers customers even greater choice thanks to a new Special Edition model and two optional performance and styling packs:
  •     The new XKR with optional Black Pack for added visual impact
  •     The new XKR with optional Speed Pack for a significantly increased maximum speed
  •     The XKR Special Edition, which combines both packs to create the ultimate supercharged sports coupe.
The 2011 Model Year XKR features the acclaimed AJ-V8 Gen III R direct-injection engine – the most advanced and efficient supercharged engine Jaguar has ever produced:
5.0-litre supercharged AJ-V8 Gen III R delivers 510PS (510bhp SAE), 625Nm of torque and propels the XKR coupe to 60mph in just 4.6 seconds.

With the optional Speed Pack, the maximum speed of the XKR is raised from 155mph (250km/h) to an electronically limited 174mph (280km/h) thanks to recalibration of the engine management system.

New optional Black Pack allows customers to create a bold, extrovert XKR, with the addition of dramatic gloss black 20-inch Kalimnos alloy wheels, gloss black finish to the front air grilles and side Power Vents, red brake callipers, a body-coloured aerodynamic pack (including a front chin spoiler and larger rear spoiler) and an optional ‘XKR’ body side graphic along the lower sills.

State-of-the-art six-speed automatic transmission has seamless gearshifts, while an advanced Active Differential Control and Adaptive Dynamics suspension system further optimises traction and handling.

The XKR’s advanced aluminium body architecture is strong and lightweight and the key to maximising the car’s performance, dynamic agility, competitive CO2 emissions and fuel economy.

Improved CO2 emissions performance (Euro Stage V compliant two years ahead of legislative requirement) and fuel economy comparable to the previous 4.2-litre XKR engine.

The 2011 XKR remains true to the heritage of Jaguar’s legendary performance, delivering a superb balance of dynamic ability and refinement.

Exciting user-friendly technologies such as the JaguarDrive Selector™ further enhance performance, driving dynamics and the XKR’s luxury sporting character.

The new XKR Special Edition with Speed and Black Packs is unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show on March 4th, 2010.
